How Hypnotherapy can help PCOS (Polycystic Ovaries Syndrome)

Millions of women are affected by PCOS with more being diagnosed every day. PCOS is described as harmless cysts which sit on the ovaries. If a woman is diagnosed with PCOS she is higher risk of developing type II diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, fertility problems, a higher risk of miscarriage, preeclampsia, depression and eating disorders. That is why no matter what age you are, if you are diagnosed with this condition you need to make sure you minimise the risks and do something about it. The only way to successfully manage PCOS is to maintain a healthy lifestyle including healthy eating, regular exercise, reduce stress, maintain a healthy BMI and limit alcohol intake.

There are alternative therapies out there such as medication to balance hormone levels, a procedure where a laser buns away the tissue around the ovaries which produce the cysts and diet tablets. These all carry their own risks and have their own side effects.

According to the latest statistics it is now up to 5-10% of women that are currently living with this syndrome. Sufferers can experience symptoms such as:

  • Irregular / lack of periods

  • Reduced fertility

  • Unwanted facial and body hair

  • Weight problems

  • Depressions and mood changes

  • Acne

  • Thinning of the hair

  • Long term risk of developing type 2 diabetes

PCOS was first diagnosed in 1935 and although a lot more is known about it now we are still not aware as a society as much as other conditions. Once you have your diagnosis the GP will usually tell you to immediately reduce your weight (if you are overweight) and give an option of medications to help regulate the cycle. Which is all very well but what about dealing with the emotional issues that come from having such a syndrome? The inevitable low self-esteem that comes from struggling to lose weight as suffers often find that due to the syndrome there weight loss is slower. The low confidence that comes when trying to conceive a baby or even having to tell friends and family who probably have never heard of this condition before. Dealing with unwanted facial hair and acne on a monthly basis. However, the power is within your hands to take control, to get on top of your symptoms and not be a sufferer but a person who has to have this syndrome. This is your life and your body.

Hypnotherapy is a fantastic way in which to take control, firstly by addressing the psychological issues and working with the subconscious mind to address any weight loss, food cravings and helping to help make healthy choices. Studies have shown that Hypnotherapy has been known to help increase fertility by relaxation techniques and really getting to the client to listen to their bodies and understanding themselves. Hypnotherapy is a fantastic way to improves self-esteem, increase confidence and work through underlying causes to reduce depression by dealing with the route cause and not just the symptoms.
